There are six large information boards relating to the Giant Gippsland Earthworm, (Megascolides Australis) that are attached to the walls of the Loch Village pedestrian underpass. (under the Highway Bypass). The underpass adjoins Sunnyside Park, which is located at the Eastern end of Lochs main street, Victoria Road.
The pedestrian underpass takes you through to the Loch Railway Station and Strzelecki Lions Club Market site.
The Earthworm information display is an educational tourism feature organised by Loch residents, Amanda Dinger & Sue Whyte, under the auspices of the Loch Community Development Association.
The Giant Gippsland Earthworm display highlights the significance of the worm to Loch and the surrounding region. Many locals and visitors to Loch, would not be aware that the Giant Gippsland Earthworm lives below the surface in the surrounding gullies and nearby creek banks and that is the only place in the world where they are found! The information supplied on the display panels, aims to educate people of the worms fragility as a species, and how, through re-vegetation efforts, its habitat may be preserved. The Information panels highlight the studies of Dr Beverley Van Pragh and Dr Alan Yen and also that of world renowned environmentalist, Sir David Attenborough. The display was co-funded by Australian Geographic and VicRoads.
