Cape Horn Lookout can be found 2km up the Loch-Wonthaggi Rd, which begins as Clarence Street alongside the Loch General Store & Newsagency in the main street of Loch.(There are brown & white tourist signs to help you with directions).
The Lookout is on a gravel track, that arcs off a bend, up the top of the first big hill on the Loch-Wonthaggi Rd, leaving Loch. This gravel track was originally the main road and the bend was referred to as 'Cape Horn' by locals, as it was shaped like Cape Horn in Sth Africa and so the name stuck!
Previously a weed infested rubbish dumping ground, Cape Horn Lookout was developed as a tourism feature by the Loch Community Development Association in partnership with the South Gippsland Shire Council. Assistance was also given by the Strzelecki Lions Club and the Loch-Nyora Landcare group.
It was officially opened in November,2004
As well as magnificent postcard views and a picnic table, Cape Horn Lookout features a directional monument built out of local basalt and bluestone. The bronze plaque on the top of the monument, points out 30 destinations, some of which can be seen with the naked eye and others that require the assistance of a set of binoculars.
On a clear day you can see the Police Academy in Mount Waverley and the Rialto Towers in the Melbourne city skyline. Looking out towards Westernport Bay you can see French Island and in winter you can see snow on top of Mount Baw Baw. The flame at the Bass Gas plant in Nyora is often spectacular viewed from the Lookout at night.
It is too windy at the Lookout for a rubbish bin, so please take your litter away with you if visiting.
